Vinka

I was always intrigued by those 3D dinosaur puzzles you get from visiting science museums. I loved how you didn't need any glue to put it together and how the experience was always so rewarding once it was put together. This idea carried on with me into this concept. I wanted to design an accent light that can be put together and possibly customized by the consumer. The goal was to create a minimal design that could help accent a space with a diffused light. I wanted to highlight the material and how the interlocking patterns casted unique shadows.
I started off with a 3D model organic model that I then sliced to create the individual pieces. The main structure is held together by interlocking pieces of laser cut sanded plywood.  This was chosen due to its lightweight structure and smooth surfaces for exterior facing projects. The accent light uses no glue for its support because of the interlocking pieces of wood. The light source comes from a pendant light that is inserted before the assembly process.
Personal Project: 2019
Exploring how different interlocking patterns diffuse light. I was after a calming light that could serve as a mood light. A type of light to compliment any reading space.
Prototyping was a crucial part of this project. It allowed me test different interlocking patterns, as well as, tolerances for each piece. It also served as an easy way to test the assembly process to make it easy for anyone to build.
The word "VINKA" comes from the Swedish word for "WAVE." I drew inspiration from Scandinavian design for its simplicity and functional aesthetic. The parametric design looks like a living sphere that is constantly moving; similar to that of waves in the ocean.
